Welcome to the 70th Annual Tucson Gem and Mineral Show®
March 19 and 20 of 1955 began a phenomenon that made Tucson the “Mecca of the mineral world”. Each year, people from around the world come to celebrate the beauty and wonder of minerals, gems, and fossils from around the world. It began as a humble “rock show” in a grade-school cafeteria (if an attendance of 1,500 people in two days can be called “humble”). We are pleased to welcome members of the Helen Keeling Elementary School community to celebrate this anniversary with us.
I doubt that anyone dreamed it would grow into what we see today. And I am not sure anyone today can fully explain why that happened. Some probable factors in its growth include the wealth of mineral deposits and mines close to Tucson and the influence of the University of Arizona with its mining and geology departments and the oldest continually curated mineral museum west of the Mississippi River.
The 1950s and 60s saw a rapidly growing interest in collecting minerals, fossils, and gems among the general US population, aided by expansion of the national and interstate highway systems. The show received a boost in 1961, when the Smithsonian Institution first brought an exhibit to the show and has done so every year since, except for a two-year Covid-19 hiatus. About 50 other world-wide institutes and museums join them at our show, making it one of the richest and most diverse earth-science exhibitions in the world.
Tucson Gem and Mineral Society’s educational passion sets our show apart. In addition to an amazing collection of dealers and the institutional displays, numerous private collectors and organizations also exhibit. Other educational features include a lecture series with speakers covering topics of interest to collectors, academics, and the public, and government and non-profit organizations that present information, meetings, lectures, and interactive exhibits.
An important feature of our show is our investment in the next generation of collectors and enthusiasts. Friday morning, hundreds of students from area schools come to the show for free to view exhibits and visit the dealers. An important criterion in selecting dealers for the show is their willingness to interact with and offer appropriate material for young people.
On Friday afternoon, the Junior Education Area opens where young folks can start their mineral collections with a set of labelled mineral specimens, interact with hands-on displays and experiments, and meet Geoscience students from the University of Arizona Society for Earth Science Students (SESS).
I am honored to be part of this show, and I hope your visit will be a wonder-filled opportunity to Explore, Discover, and Share this hobby with us. By the way, March 20, 1955, was my first birthday. So, I guess it was just meant to be!
– Mark Marikos
2025 TGMS Show Committee Chair
On behalf of Tucson Gem and Mineral Society, welcome to our 70th annual Show, “Shades of Green – Experience the Magic.” As always, I look forward to seeing all the friendly faces and wonderful displays that make this the Best Mineral and Gem show in the World! I and Tucson are so lucky to have all of you come here for this great show and it is such a wonderful pleasure to host you in our city every year.
This year’s theme will have some exciting varieties of different green shades with all sorts of beautiful cases and exhibits featuring some fantastic mineral specimens and gorgeous jewelry. The club members and volunteers put many hours in planning and hard work on this year-round to bring to our visitors this unique and wonderful show.
The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show® is unique in its educational emphasis, attracting novice collectors to academic researchers. It is the largest of its kind put on by volunteers, and the only one in its class sponsored by a local non-profit club that you could join! Look for membership opportunities on our website (www.tgms.org) or at the information booths in the Exhibit Hall or Galleria. Seventy-seven years ago (December 3, 1946), a couple dozen collectors met to form TGMS. In March 1955, two weeks after visiting a Phoenix show, members put together their own in a school auditorium. As it grew, and eventually moved to the Tucson Community Center, others began to see opportunities, and satellite shows appeared.
In 1961 a member audaciously invited the Smithsonian Institute to bring a display. At the time, the Smithsonian didn’t take anything anywhere, but Mineral Collection Curator, Paul Desautels was intrigued, and convinced his superiors to try it. Every year since, the Smithsonian has partnered with us, displaying many priceless national treasures. Such partnerships with other museums contribute to the uniqueness of our Show. Whatever your interests, I know you will find an abundance of exhibits and merchandise to enjoy.
Visit our Junior Education Area (east end of the Galleria) and see how our partnership with the University of Arizona, Society of Earth Science Students (SESS) is influencing new generations with the collecting bug. There will be several free lectures on a variety of topics at all levels, so please make time in your day to catch one of these. If you need assistance, please look for a Docent wearing a green vest that can answer questions or direct you to someone who can. When the urge comes, grab a snack or drink and meet other collectors or Dealers in the food-court.
Thank you for coming, we hope you have such a great time that you will return year-after-year. There is nothing else in the world quite like the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show®, and I hope you will go a step further and join TGMS so you can add your talents and dedication to future shows.
